Happy Halloween!

This Halloween we are so excited to take our little green dragon trick-or-treating to a couple of our neighbors' houses before posting up with some friends and opening the door all evening long.  Since he is still just a little one (15 months now!!), he's not really into the candy, but more into just watching the kids and the decorations, and tossing pumpkins!!

It has become somewhat of a tradition in our house to have chili and cornbread on Halloween.  Something about chili is just so good on what is usually a cold evening, before diving into the candy bowl one mini snickers at a time!

I will be making two different kinds of chili this year- one vegetarian, and one with elk(!) since we have a freezer full as of two weeks ago.

The vegetarian one sounds delicious and is a fairly standard recipe from queen Martha Stewart.  I usually like to add in some soy crumbles for a little extra oomph...

  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced medium
  • 4 garlic cloves, roughly chopped
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chipotle chile powder
  • Coarse salt and ground pepper
  • 1 medium zucchini, cut into 1/2-inch dice
  • 3/4 cup (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 1 can (15.5 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can (15.5 ounces) pinto beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes with green chiles
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
In a large pot, heat oil over medium-high. Add onion and garlic; cook, stirring frequently, until onion is translucent and garlic is soft, about 4 minutes. Add cumin and chile powder, season with salt and pepper, and cook until spices are fragrant, 1 minute. Add zucchini and tomato paste; cook, stirring frequently, until tomato paste is deep brick red, 3 minutes. Stir in black beans, pinto beans, and both cans diced tomatoes. Add 2 cups water and bring mixture to a boil. Reduce to a medium simmer and cook until zucchini is tender and liquid reduces slightly, 20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

The cornbread is a recipe that I have been making for years and I couldn't even begin to tell you where it is from.  I do prefer to make mine in a skillet because I just like the way it gets  crusty in there.  Give it a try!

2 cups yellow cornmeal
1 1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
3 eggs, beaten
1 tablespoon vegetable oil, for skillet
2 cups milk
1/4 cup melted butter
melted butter for brushing top
(I add fresh (or frozen) corn kernels and a can of diced jalapenos)

1. Preheat oven to 425. Put oil or shortening in a 10-inch iron skillet and place in the oven to preheat while making batter
2. In a mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and sugar, if using.
3. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk and butter.  Combine with dry ingredients, add in the corn and jalapenos, and stir until all ingredients are moistened.  Batter will be like a thick pancake batter.
4.  Carefully, lift skillet out and turn to coat all of the inside surface with oil.  Pour in batter and return to oven.  Bake for about 20-25 minutes, until browned.  A toothpick inserted in center should come out clean.

I like for everyone to serve themselves right off the stovetop- so I will set out the fixings to go with it- shredded cheddar cheese, tortilla chips, and maybe some sour cream and chives.
Mmmm.  Now I'm hungry!!

I hope you and yours has a very happy and safe Halloween.
I would love to hear what you and your littles are dressing up as this year!
Have a fun one!

Romp Shopping

I don't know why finding cute winter hats for toddlers has to be so hard.  I have had such little luck finding a cute hat that does not have an animal face, or ears, double pom poms or just something too ridiculous looking.
Why can't all kids hats be just as adorable and pretty as the ones I found on Etsy at rompshop?!
All of the pieces are sweet and soft looking- just what little girls should wear!
Now if I only had a little girl to put in that Posy hat and the tunic sweater...  Swoon!

A Holiday Treat

Now THIS is the holiday experience your kids won't forget.
(available on Gilt)
A stay at the beautiful Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco with a one hour photo shoot in the life-size gingerbread house.
The gingerbread house is actually made of real gingerbread- thousands of pounds of gingerbread, chocolate, candies, and frosting!!!  YUM!

Have you ever seen anything like it?!

It has to be one of the most special holiday treats out there- and top it off with shopping and seeing all the beautiful holiday window displays at Union Square, what a fabulous weekend!  Taking kids to see the animals that the SPCA puts in the Macy's windows is so fun too!
Okay Halloween and Thanksgiving, I'm starting to feel like you can move along so we can get ready for the real holiday season!

As a lover of teepees, tents, forts, and all things cozy- the H&M tent is the ultimate winter hideaway!  It even has a checked floor inside and a roll up door- all for $59.95!!!  For any of your bambinos that want to start glamping at a young age- this seems like the way to do it.  And it all rolls up into a cute little tote!

Latest Loves

Some things I am loving right now...

Andy showed off the new Sonja t-shirt on the Real Housewives of New York reunion. It says, "I don't stir the pot, I stir the drink".
Love it!

Watching the leaves changing colors in Colorado is spectacular!  I am getting in the mood for Fall this year.  It is so fun living somewhere where there are real seasons happening outside my door.

I picked up these lounge pants at JCrew and I'm in love.  They are so comfortable and cozy and a nice change from my regular soft pants.

It is no surprise that I love Pinterest and spend way to much time pinning in the evening.  But it's because there are so many great ideas and resources.  Like this one.  Just an endless amount of goodness!

Crazy for Crewcuts

I have been a little bit bored with JCrew the past few months, but I think they are coming back.  I just got the CrewCuts catalog and there were so many cute new things for kids- especially the girls- (no surprise!).
I am absolutely crazy over some of the bags for girls right now- the Glitter Overnighter  and the Glitter Tote are just so sparkly and fun! and some of the sweaters look really cute and cozy (cashmere!)... and the shoes! don't even get me started on the shoes!!
Perfect gifts to order and store away for Christmas!!

Take a Seat

We've all seen the Pottery Barn Kids Anywhere Chair, which is cute and all- but I am in love with the Drew chair at Giggle!  It comes in aqua, pink, or black and white chevron- if you are into that.  For a kids sized chair, I love the modern design and that it actually looks like adult furniture.  The kids recliner made by Crypton is another good choice- what kid wouldn't want their own recliner?!  Any of them would be such a fun addition to a playroom or a living room without being a total eyesore.

Truly Sanctuary

Next time one of your hipster friends is having a baby you need to give them one of these onesies from Truly Sanctuary.  An online shop that I found on Scout Mob.  It would definitely be a gift that dads would appreciate too!
The idea of a baby wearing a Bill Murray onesie is just too funny!

Baby, It's Cold Outside

We woke up this morning to snow outside- that's right- October 5th and there is snow in Denver!  Yikes!  We are in for it!!
I got Jackson out of bed and we went outside to check it out- I thought since he has never seen snow he would be more excited.  I guessed wrong.  He wasn't really into it at all.
It may have had to do with the fact that he was probably really cold without a decent jacket on.
I am going to have to hit up my favorite place to shop for him- Gap Kids- and get him some decent clothes to wear so he doesn't freeze his tush off!

Plaid Puffer Jacket
This plaid jacket reminds me of my old school uniform.

I love a chunky knit sweater, and a fleecy neck- perfection!

Nate Berkus

I know my blog has shifted gears a little bit lately, less baby stuff- more home stuff, a reflection of what has been on my mind lately since we moved.
After we put baby Jackson to bed, I spend my evenings browsing all of my favorite blogs, Pinterest, and researching whatever topic is on my mind that moment...
One of my favorite people to online stalk is Nate Berkus.

He seems to be everywhere lately- new book coming out- The Things That Matter, Target collection, HSN, Architectural Digest, on and on...

Nate Berkus for Target

I read an article this week that has stuck with me the past couple of days.  His comments about home decorating really resonated with me- especially in the days of trends being spread like wildfire with Pinterest and blogs and all sorts of other social media.

He believes that your home should tell the story of who lives there, rich with history and tales to tell.  Not decorated with "one eye over their shoulder", because it is not about trends, or what's "in", or what the neighbors will think.
And I know just what he means... It is often evident in young peoples homes- because we are all just starting our collections, and making do with what we can afford, and focused on other areas of our lives, and it is so easy to fall into the trap...

It left me thinking, if we all just chose things that we truly love, what would our homes look like?

Change it up

I love a good repurposing of furniture and this is one of the best I've seen in a while.
An entertainment center repurposed as a changing station!  Just think of all that could be stored in there in addition to just diapers!
Thanks Pinterest for another piece of morning inspiration!

FAMILY by Novogratz

This season while watching Home by Novogratz, I have been loving the FAMILY lightboxes in their home.  They were looking very reminiscent of the FAMILY rug they designed for CB2, and now I know why.  Here is the rug...
Family Rug
This week they will be going on sale at CB2 and only 285 are going to be sold!  If you have the right home and space, they would be an amazing edition!
Pinned Image
The CB2 boxes replace the family ones that used to be in their home- remember these?  I also remember them using lightboxes in client projects as well.  A good signature piece for them...
Cortney and Bob- aren't they adorable!?

I am wondering what else they have designed for CB2- I'm guessing some tabletop accessories and maybe even chairs?  Whatever they do, I know it will be fun, colorful, and well designed.  Love them.
