Some things in life are too good not to share.  This goodness that I am about to tell you about it one of them!
And I only found out about it because my main squeeze took a trip to Whole Foods- and when he goes to the grocery store- who knows what he is coming home with!!

Let me introduce you to the most amazing thing you will ever eat:
Chocolate Peanut Butter Kettle Corn.
It is SO good- I literally had force myself to stop eating it.  Think: peanut butter cup popcorn.  Mmmmm...

In addition to that yummy goodness- for the first time in my life I bought a slow cooker.  I didn't grow up in a house that crock potted/slow cooked- so it feels very foreign to me, but I am already loving it.
Yesterday I made my hubs pulled pork.  All day long I heard him taking trips into the kitchen to look at it and smell it.  It was his Christmas.  Santa came early.  He was in heaven!
I made this recipe- and it really smelled divine (even to this vegetarian).
Easy Slow-Cooker Pulled Pork

The slow cooker I bought is this guy- the Bella 6qt from Macys

On a non-food note- I went into Anthropologie yesterday for a quick look-see and saw a couple of things that I am still hoping Santa brings me this year.

The Tropicalia Pleated Maxi Dress is calling my name.
I also think the Chevron Sparkle Bracelet would be a good addition to my jewelry box.

I also saw some really pretty red floral dishes on the sale table that I thought would be fun to mix and match as a holiday collection.  Somehow I don't envision Spode in my near future... and I would love to see them on display in my hutch!

That's about it! Have a great day gals!!

Dream On...

It's no surprise that I love a beautiful tent, cabana, teepee or anyplace cozy and relaxing.   As a lover of all things lounge-y, my latest (Pinterest) finds leaving me dreaming of lazy summer afternoons and a good book... and a babysitter and a glass of sparkling rosé.
What does your daydream look like??

The White House Christmas 2012

I missed the HGTV White House Christmas special over the weekend- but happily got to see some pictures of the amazing decorations that were put up this year.  I love that the Obamas dog, Bo, was a centerpiece in the decorations this year- and that the official tree is dedicated to US troops, veterans, and military families.  There are actually 54 trees throughout the White House- now that is some serious decorating!!
The Blue Room tree- decorated with ornaments made by the children living on US military bases.
20,000 pom poms and 80 hours later, a topiary Bo is created.
A children's wonderland in the East Garden Room.

Since the 1960's a White House gingerbread house is on display.  Absolutely fantastic!

The entire photo tour is over at HGTV- check it out!

Mama Musts

Something is in the water right now-
in the past couple of weeks several of my friends have announced that they are expecting!  Woohoo!
So in honor of all the new mama's to-be- here is my latest roundup of pregnant mama essentials.

First off, I just saw and have fallen in love with Perry Mackin Diaper Bags.  They are stylish and practical, with compartments for bottles and binkies- and are all under $200.  I like that they are chic enough to actually carry and don't scream "diaper bag".
The Zoey Bag
The Harper Bag
The HATCH Collection has been getting a lot of attention lately, and rightly so...
I love the idea of investing in a couple really great pieces that can carry you throughout pregnancy and after- and not in the "bridesmaid dress you can wear again" kind of way.  We all know that no one ever wears a bridesmaid dress again, and the last thing that new moms want to do is put on maternity clothes after the delivery.
But these pieces are things I want to wear all the time.

Every person out there needs to have a pot of Kiehls Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter.  I leave it on my nightstand and slather my hands and arms with it before bed each night.  But pregnant moms could use this on their belly's and I bet it would be incredible!

The best maternity jeans out there are Gap.  The designer jeans are not nearly as comfortable and fit as well.   Wouldn't you rather save your money to buy a cute pair that you can wear longer than 9 months?!
Gap 1969 Demi Panel Always Skinny Jeans
A good scarf/wrap really is something one can't have enough of.  I like a peppy color or print to perk up those subdued winter clothes, and even more bland maternity clothes.  It really can make all the difference in an outfit, keep a mama warm, and later be used to cover up a little while nursing.  This one is JCrew (and is on sale!).
Wide cashmere wrap
Congrats to all the pregnant mamas out there!  It really is such a joy and a blessing to have a bambino on the way.
And, for the record (because everyone keeps asking), I am NOT pregnant :)

Cheers- it's Sunday!

It's as cold as can be at a high of 20 degrees today.  Looks like we are hiding out inside, baking my Oma's butter cookies (mmm!), and hopefully going have a little bubbly!
Happy Sunday Funday!

Lights Aglow

Our neighborhood knows how to do holidays.
The houses are beautifully decorated- wreaths, bows, and lights like you wouldn' t believe!
There is even a house that have lights that dance with the music on a radio station- insane!!!

I am especially into all of the people that have decorated the trees in front of their houses like Christmas trees- I mean full lights and ornaments for all to enjoy!!
Some people even bought Christmas trees and decorated them on their porches- sharing their beauty with everyone.
Talk about the season of giving!

Outdoor porch Christmas tree. Wanted to do a live tree for first Christmas in our own home, can do this on the porch and still have my fake tree in the house up early in the month.
I love an outdoor Christmas tree

I was out browsing today in a cute shop on South Pearl Street, called "5", and overheard a girl talking about the funny pickle ornament...
She had no idea what the pickle is all about- so in honor of the stranger that was unaware-
The Christmas Pickle. On Christmas Eve, you lay out the pickle ornament in front of the tree with the milk and cookies for Santa. Then, Santa hides the pickle ornament. In the morning, the first person to find the pickle ornament receives an extra present from Santa - a tradition from the 20s.

The pickle ornament is an old German tradition- some people leave it out for Santa, then Santa hides it in the tree when he comes and the first person to find the pickle gets an extra present.  Other people have the parents hide in on Christmas Eve and the children look for it in the morning. Regardless of who hides it, whoever finds it gets an extra gift!
Sounds like a good tradition to me!!

Speaking of pickles- do yourself a favor and look for Sonoma Brinery Spicy Bread and Butter Pickles at Whole Foods.  They are amazing!!

It's good to be back!!

Happy Halloween!

This Halloween we are so excited to take our little green dragon trick-or-treating to a couple of our neighbors' houses before posting up with some friends and opening the door all evening long.  Since he is still just a little one (15 months now!!), he's not really into the candy, but more into just watching the kids and the decorations, and tossing pumpkins!!

It has become somewhat of a tradition in our house to have chili and cornbread on Halloween.  Something about chili is just so good on what is usually a cold evening, before diving into the candy bowl one mini snickers at a time!

I will be making two different kinds of chili this year- one vegetarian, and one with elk(!) since we have a freezer full as of two weeks ago.

The vegetarian one sounds delicious and is a fairly standard recipe from queen Martha Stewart.  I usually like to add in some soy crumbles for a little extra oomph...

  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced medium
  • 4 garlic cloves, roughly chopped
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon chipotle chile powder
  • Coarse salt and ground pepper
  • 1 medium zucchini, cut into 1/2-inch dice
  • 3/4 cup (6 ounces) tomato paste
  • 1 can (15.5 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can (15.5 ounces) pinto beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes with green chiles
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
In a large pot, heat oil over medium-high. Add onion and garlic; cook, stirring frequently, until onion is translucent and garlic is soft, about 4 minutes. Add cumin and chile powder, season with salt and pepper, and cook until spices are fragrant, 1 minute. Add zucchini and tomato paste; cook, stirring frequently, until tomato paste is deep brick red, 3 minutes. Stir in black beans, pinto beans, and both cans diced tomatoes. Add 2 cups water and bring mixture to a boil. Reduce to a medium simmer and cook until zucchini is tender and liquid reduces slightly, 20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

The cornbread is a recipe that I have been making for years and I couldn't even begin to tell you where it is from.  I do prefer to make mine in a skillet because I just like the way it gets  crusty in there.  Give it a try!

2 cups yellow cornmeal
1 1/2 cups flour
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
3 eggs, beaten
1 tablespoon vegetable oil, for skillet
2 cups milk
1/4 cup melted butter
melted butter for brushing top
(I add fresh (or frozen) corn kernels and a can of diced jalapenos)

1. Preheat oven to 425. Put oil or shortening in a 10-inch iron skillet and place in the oven to preheat while making batter
2. In a mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and sugar, if using.
3. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk and butter.  Combine with dry ingredients, add in the corn and jalapenos, and stir until all ingredients are moistened.  Batter will be like a thick pancake batter.
4.  Carefully, lift skillet out and turn to coat all of the inside surface with oil.  Pour in batter and return to oven.  Bake for about 20-25 minutes, until browned.  A toothpick inserted in center should come out clean.

I like for everyone to serve themselves right off the stovetop- so I will set out the fixings to go with it- shredded cheddar cheese, tortilla chips, and maybe some sour cream and chives.
Mmmm.  Now I'm hungry!!

I hope you and yours has a very happy and safe Halloween.
I would love to hear what you and your littles are dressing up as this year!
Have a fun one!

Romp Shopping

I don't know why finding cute winter hats for toddlers has to be so hard.  I have had such little luck finding a cute hat that does not have an animal face, or ears, double pom poms or just something too ridiculous looking.
Why can't all kids hats be just as adorable and pretty as the ones I found on Etsy at rompshop?!
All of the pieces are sweet and soft looking- just what little girls should wear!
Now if I only had a little girl to put in that Posy hat and the tunic sweater...  Swoon!

A Holiday Treat

Now THIS is the holiday experience your kids won't forget.
(available on Gilt)
A stay at the beautiful Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco with a one hour photo shoot in the life-size gingerbread house.
The gingerbread house is actually made of real gingerbread- thousands of pounds of gingerbread, chocolate, candies, and frosting!!!  YUM!

Have you ever seen anything like it?!

It has to be one of the most special holiday treats out there- and top it off with shopping and seeing all the beautiful holiday window displays at Union Square, what a fabulous weekend!  Taking kids to see the animals that the SPCA puts in the Macy's windows is so fun too!
Okay Halloween and Thanksgiving, I'm starting to feel like you can move along so we can get ready for the real holiday season!

As a lover of teepees, tents, forts, and all things cozy- the H&M tent is the ultimate winter hideaway!  It even has a checked floor inside and a roll up door- all for $59.95!!!  For any of your bambinos that want to start glamping at a young age- this seems like the way to do it.  And it all rolls up into a cute little tote!

Latest Loves

Some things I am loving right now...

Andy showed off the new Sonja t-shirt on the Real Housewives of New York reunion. It says, "I don't stir the pot, I stir the drink".
Love it!

Watching the leaves changing colors in Colorado is spectacular!  I am getting in the mood for Fall this year.  It is so fun living somewhere where there are real seasons happening outside my door.

I picked up these lounge pants at JCrew and I'm in love.  They are so comfortable and cozy and a nice change from my regular soft pants.

It is no surprise that I love Pinterest and spend way to much time pinning in the evening.  But it's because there are so many great ideas and resources.  Like this one.  Just an endless amount of goodness!

Crazy for Crewcuts

I have been a little bit bored with JCrew the past few months, but I think they are coming back.  I just got the CrewCuts catalog and there were so many cute new things for kids- especially the girls- (no surprise!).
I am absolutely crazy over some of the bags for girls right now- the Glitter Overnighter  and the Glitter Tote are just so sparkly and fun! and some of the sweaters look really cute and cozy (cashmere!)... and the shoes! don't even get me started on the shoes!!
Perfect gifts to order and store away for Christmas!!

Take a Seat

We've all seen the Pottery Barn Kids Anywhere Chair, which is cute and all- but I am in love with the Drew chair at Giggle!  It comes in aqua, pink, or black and white chevron- if you are into that.  For a kids sized chair, I love the modern design and that it actually looks like adult furniture.  The kids recliner made by Crypton is another good choice- what kid wouldn't want their own recliner?!  Any of them would be such a fun addition to a playroom or a living room without being a total eyesore.
